| LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
The
town of South River is just 30 minutes north of Huntsville and
30 minutes south of North Bay. Maeck Lake is situated approximately
30 km from South River. The town of South River is situated between
tow provincial parks. It is the canoe entrance for Algonquin Park
in the east and Mikisew Provincial Park is located to the west.
The South River was once traversed by Tom Thompson of the Group
of Seven. South River is home to a yearly artisan festival each
August. There is a local café in town where live jazz is
featured Friday evenings.
Fifteen
minutes from both the cottage and South River lies the Hockey
Opportunity Camp which draws young players internationally for
an annual summer training camp.
Snow machine routes
run throughout the region. There is direct access to one route
from the entranceway of the cottage. Snow tubing is offered at
Rock Ridge in Huntsville and Jack Pine hill in North Bay. Downhill
skiing is also found at Jack Pine hill. There is a bowling alley
and small movie
theatre in Burk's Falls. Sundridge is home to the Maple Sugar
house, local wares and delicious pancake breakfasts. Dino's Justa
Pasta, south of Sundridge is a must stop restaurant, popular among
residents across the region.
Golfing may be enjoyed
at Eagle Lake golf course just 15 minutes from the cottage.
Eagle Lake Country store offers sundry supplies, ice cream, video
rentals, newspapers, maps and information. There is a shallow,
sandy beach and children's play area at Eagle Lake. Boats may
be launched or rented there as well. The store also provides a
propane gas tank exchange.
The Nipissing Trails
may be hiked or biked and run south from North Bay within 10 minutes
of Great Whispering Pine. Horseback riding is located off Riding
Ranch Road, 20 minutes from the cottage.
There is an information
centre, Post Office, Pharmacy,
Grocery Store, LCBO,
Beer Store, library (with internet
access), gas station, fitness centre
and medical centre in South River.
Hospitals are located in North Bay and Huntsville. There is a
medical clinic in Burk's Falls as
well.
Much of Highway 11
has been expanded to two lanes for a more comfortable drive. Continued
expansion will see two lanes from Highway 400 north to North Bay
in the future.
